LAKEPORT — Former firefighter Wilbur H. Cope was found competent to stand trial on Friday. Cope underwent evaluation by psychiatrist Dr. Douglas Rosoff of Ukiah on orders from Judge Richard C. Martin to determine competence. Cope”s court-appointed attorney, Bruce Laning had expressed his doubt about Cope”s competence to stand trial, so Judge Martin ordered a psychological evaluation. According to California Penal Code section 1368, a person may not be tried or assigned punishment if found to be mentally incompetent.

Cope is being charged with murder for the shooting death of Kristin Lori Raviotta early Sunday, Sept. 10. He additionally faces three counts of attempted murder with the use of a firearm for the shooting of Terry Cain, Michele Cain and Sharon England. One count includes an allegation of great bodily harm. Cope has pled innocent to all charges.

The case is being prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney John Langon. A preliminary hearing is set for Friday, Jan. 26 at 9 a.m. before Judge Martin at the Court House in Dept. No. 2.
