LAKEPORT — Corey Dillon, Aaron Marshall and Ryan Grady scored six points apiece during the pivotal third quarter and the Clear Lake Cardinals beat the St. Helena Saints 50-40 in the North Central League I South opener for both of these junior varsity boys” basketball teams on Friday night in Lakeport.
Clear Lake (1-0 South, 12-3 overall) trailed 21-18 at halftime, but a 21-7 third quarter pushed the Cardinals ahead to stay.
“It was the most physical game we”ve played all season, kind of a let ”em play night,” Clear Lake coach Chris Fisher said. “They took us out of our game a little bit.”
But in the second half, the Cardinals did a better job adapting to the Saints” physical play and eventually took control of the game.
“We ran the ball a little more and out defense stepped it up a notch,” Fisher said.
Dillon led all scorers with 18 points, Ryan Richardson finished with nine and Noel McCormack had seven.
