LAKEPORT — Megan McDonald”s 3-point shot to tie the game rimmed out at the final buzzer and the Clear Lake Cardinals fell 38-35 to the St. Helena Saints in a thrilling North Central League I South junior varsity girls” basketball game at Clear Lake High School.

“It rimmed in and out,” Clear Lake coach Kory Reynolds said of McDonald”s last-second shot. “I thought it was in … but it just wouldn”t go.”

Clear Lake held St. Helena without a basket in the fourth quarter. All six of the Saints” points came at the free-throw line.

What really hurt the Cardinals” chances of winning the game was their inability to make free throws in the fourth period when they hit just two of 14.

Brianna Butcher”s eight points paced the Cardinals. Elena Tipton and Carly Williams added five points apiece.
