KELSEYVILLE — Another scam has surfaced locally, as residents around Lake County receive letters and e-mails claiming that they have “won” a considerable amount of money in an international lottery.
According to a consumer fraud reporting Web site, people worldwide have received letters and e-mails from “Loteria Primitva.” The company claims to have its headquarters in Hambung, Germany. This “lottery,” like most things that seem too good to be true, is a scam.
According to a Web site and victims of the scam, the letters and e-mails ask for the “winner” to contact the office and fax back personal information. The office then persuades the “winner” to send cash in order to receive the “winnings.”
Residents are asked to beware of any solicitation receives via letter or e-mail.
The District Attorney”s Office strongly suggest that consumers keep the following in mind:
? There is no reason for someone who is giving you money to ask you to wire money back.
? As always, if it seems too good to be true, it likely is.
If you think you are the target or victim of a fraud, report it at once. Potential victims are advised to call the state attorney general, Better Business Bureau, or local consumer protection agency. Their phone numbers are listed in the phone book.
