MARYSVILLE — Score 20 points or pull 20 rebounds in a game and you”ve done an outstanding job. Kami Kapuku, a freshman guard for the Yuba College women”s basketball team, had a school-record 18 steals on Wednesday night in a 60-49 win over Mendocino College in Bay Valley Conference action in Marysville.

“A lot of them were flat-out steals,” Mendocino coach Stan Weiper said. “But we helped her out a couple of times, too.”

Mendocino”s weakness all season, turnovers, bit the Eagles again as they committed 32.

“We were equal opportunity with the turnovers,” Weiper said. “They were not just by the guards.”

Mendocino (4-5 BVC, 7-19 overall) trailed 20-6 in the first half but fought back to a 25-25 halftime tie.

Yuba pulled back in front in the second half and held the lead the rest of the way. Mendocino closed to within five points with two minutes remaining and had to foul the 49ers, who responded by hitting their free throws.

Former Kelseyville High School star Kristen Andre led the Eagles with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Amber Shepherd added nine points, Kyra Platte had eight, and Ashley Quiroga and Katie Stiles finished with six apiece.

Mendocino hosts Merritt College on Friday at 5:30 p.m. The Eagles are home again Wednesday to play Solano College at 5:30 p.m., and they wrap up their season Feb. 16 against Los Medanos College in Pittsburg at 5:30 p.m.
