Reporting distorts the facts

I”ve just returned and was going through the hometown newspapers and here is what I see: Civil rights group backs Hughes (Wednesday, Jan. 17).

There is something drastically wrong with the story by Rene Morales. It is like looking into a carnival mirror. You see a grotesque undulating image of yourself and all around you.

The facts are, as I know them: Mr. Edmonds and his family did not go to San Francisco to cause mayhem in Mr. Hughes” home. If Mr. Edmonds did not have a gun to defend his family, most probably the whole family would”ve been found dead with no witnesses. Now, who is the martyr according to the PC Gospel?

You are not a journalist, Mr. Morales, but a PC propagandist. Clearlake and Lake County are two of the most peaceful places in the State of California. Here, we live in harmony with our black neighbors.

I”ve not seen such a blatant distortion of the facts from any group since I left the Soviet Union. Aren”t we still living in God-blessed America? Get on your knees and kiss the ground.

Ivins was a Texas original

Molly Ivins was a Texas original. She was loved by her readers and by her many friends, particularly in Central Texas. I respected her convictions, her passionate belief in the power of words, and her ability to turn a phrase. She fought her illness with that same passion. Her quick wit and commitment to her beliefs will be missed. Laura and I send our condolences to Molly Ivins” family and friends.

We need a Boys & Girls Club

The word on the street of Middletown was that Saturday night, Jan. 20, several teens (at least two from Hidden Valley) stole bottles of whiskey from Hardester”s Market. They then proceeded to consume the whiskey at St. Helena Creek, and then left leaving one girl unconscious and exposed to freezing nighttime temperatures. Someone called the paramedics, which probably saved the girl”s life. I feel this kind of behavior maybe the result of the local kids feeling we don”t care about them.

The county is willing to advance $100,000-plus to put in new street lamps to replace the old in Middletown. I don”t deny new street lamps would improve the looks of our town, but doesn”t this signify we care more about street lamps than what would benefit our kids?

We need a Boys & Girls Club in Middletown. The county, I think, still owns a vacant lot just north of Loconoma School, that comprises the south one-third of the Methodist Church block. Maybe once MATH encourages the county to donate the land we could get a team from Real Goods, at Hopland, or a local team to design and construct an energy efficient straw bale building, or a well insulated steel building.

Our local youth could be invited to help construct the club building while learning a beneficial trade. I understand Mike Thompson, our local congress person, has control of funds for this purpose. We also have a willing grant writing person who is willing to put in free energy because she loves kids so much. Children working on this project focuses their enormous energy toward a worthwhile project, while instilling the feeling that they have an equity in this project and will respect it as such. The basketball court across the street at Loconoma High School as well as their vast unused parking area makes the county lot more desirable.

So folks, I would like to see one of the first MATH (Middletown Area Town Hall) projects to be initiated would be to get a Boys & Girls Club built ? the street lamps are already provided for with approved money (funding).

Please call or write our local congressman Mike Thompson, and our county supervisor Ed Robey, and other supervisors, of the need for a place for kids to go after school that is safe and comfortable as well as a place that offers tutoring help when needed. We should be able to get donations of a pool table and ping pong table, among other entertaining items. Show our kids we do care about them.
