“It was an amazing game. They were amazing,” said Clear Lake coach Ken Hook of his opponents, the last-place Upper Lake Cougars who very nearly upset his league-leading Cardinals.
“We were lucky to win it,” he said, noting a missed Upper Lake freethrow attempt at the close of regulation is the only thing that prevented an upset.
The Cardinals showed good depth offensively with 10 players on the scoreboard lead by Brandon White with 16, Agustin Perez with 12 and Armando Martinez and Freddie Olloqui with 10 each. White scored seven of his 16 points in overtime, including the go-ahead bucket.
Jacob Widener lead Upper Lake”s offense with 18 points with three three-pointers. He scored seven in overtime. Other Cougars in double figures included Max Curtis with 17 points and Kyle Coleman with 16, incluidng three threes.
Clear Lake hosts St. Helena Thursday in the first round of post-season play.
Lower Lake upsets Willits 58-49
For a few moments last night Lower Lake coach Marty Udy thought his 9-17 record might be enought to get into the post season tournament after upsetting the league”s No.2 2 team Willits (20-6). If Kelseyville beat Middletown the Trojans were tourney-bound.
That didn”t happen, but the Trojans finished their season on a high note dominating Willits.
The Trojans used a “junk defense” in the first half, holding the powerful Willits offense to just eight points in the first quarter and held a 29-26 lead at halftime. The three-point lead slipped to two by the end of the third period.
Defense again was the key to the final period as Willits managed only four points while Lower Lake posted 11.
Lower Lake”s offense was lead by Mike Deakins with 19 points and 12 rebounds, Matt Parks with 13 points and Anthony Lucchesi with 6 points and 10 assists.
Nathan Campbell, with 14 and Chrles Wright, with 13, led the Willits scoring effort.
