MIDDLETOWN -? Simone Hingston-Roos is the first woman to be promoted to black belt at the Middletown Judo Club.
Hingston-Roos and Steven Lehman, a coach for Middletown Judo, performed a series of techniques called the Nage No Kata for the Middletown Judo Club gathering Feb. 1. Professor Fletcher Thornton, seventh-degree black belt, presided over the demonstration.
Nage No Kata translated, means forms of throwing. This kata consists of 15 throws, from a possible 100 or more, that are representative of the major types of throws. Each throw is demonstrated on both sides for a total of 30. Practice for Nage No Kata generally requires months of effort from the participants.
Hingston-Roos” devotion to the art of judo and her international experience are tremendous assets to Middletown Judo. She now joins the coaching staff for the Middletown Junior Judo program.
