6 ounces costs Reese $455,000

BIRMINGHAM, AL. — California bass pro Skeet Reese of Auburn came within 6 ounces of realizing every bass fisherman”s dream in the Bassmasters Classic held at Lay Lake in Alabama during the weekend.

Reese weighed in 48 pounds, 4 ounces to finish in second place behind Boyd Duckett of Demopolis, Al., who had 48 pounds, 10 ounces. That 6 ounces meant the difference between the first-place money of $500,000 and Reese”s second-place money of $45,000. In other words, the 6 ounces of bass was worth a cool $455,000.

The Bassmasters Classic is considered the Super Bowl of professional bass fishing and fishermen from around the world compete in the annual three-day tournament.

Reese has close ties to Lake County. His brother, Jimmy, lives here and is a well-known professional bass fisherman in his own right. Skeet has often said Clear Lake is one of his favorite lakes. He will be here March 28 to compete in the Bassmasters Elite Series.

Skeet Reese is rated as one of the top professional fishermen in the world.
