Lake County Poet Laureate Sandra Wade invites you to celebrate International Women”s Day from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at the Redbud Library meeting room.
International Women”s Day (IWD) has been observed since in the early 1900s according to the official IWD Web site, www.internationalwomensday.com. The celebration originated within the Socialist movement.
In 1908, the Web site notes, great unrest and critical debate was occuring among women. Oppression and inequality spurred women to become more active in campaigning for change. In 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights.
The first National Women”s Day was held on Feb. 28, 1909 in accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America.
At a Socialist International meeting in 1910 at Copenhagen, an International Women”s Day was proposed. On March 19, 1911, IWD was honored for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Today IWD is a global day of recognition across developed and developing countries alike.
To celebrate IWD locally, bring a sample of work by yourself and/or a favorite woman author, poet, scientist, inventor, artist or singer, etc. to share with others.
