I found the photo of the crosses in Lafayette in Saturday”s Record Bee (March 10) very upsetting. I was not offended by the crosses, which copy those placed on hillsides and beaches by Peace activists in Lafayette, Napa, Santa Monica and elsewhere to commemorate all people killed by the criminal insanity of this war. I found the sign offensive which says, “Support our Troops, Let them win.” The whole idea of continuing this war for American power and cheap oil is totally offensive.
Win??? Win what? What have you won if your face has been half blown off, or for the rest of your life you carry with you the memory of mowing down a hundred innocent people with your AK-47 because one sniper fired at you? If you get the chance, see and listen to our children, the troops that “conservatives” want to leave in the killing fields “defending our right” to tell others what”s best for them — listen to the returning vets tell you like it really is in the film, “The Ground Truth.”
Write to your Congressman, and tell them to stop it. Stop giving the Hawks in D.C. more money for “winning” or “success” or “honor” or whatever they want to call it this week.
Congress must and can stop it. When they say they can”t, that”s pure nonsense. There are already two proposed bills in Congress, HR508 by Woolsey, Waters and Lee, and HR746 by McGovern, and a 12-point plan by Kucinich. These would all get us out of Iraq, help the Iraqis help themselves, and save some vestige of our honor with restitution.
But neither the Republicans nor Democrats will listen because 1.) the solution is proposed by Progressives, and 2.) it gives Iraqis control of their own oil and pulls our troops out of harm”s way altogether. All Congress has to do to stop the war is stop the money. Filibuster if they have to but stop it, stop it, stop it!
