MIDDLETOWN — Winning all five matches in straight sets, the Middletown High School tennis team blanked Clear Lake 5-0 in the Coastal Mountain Conference opener for both teams on Thursday in Middletown.

“We came out pretty strong and played pretty solid,” Middletown coach Mark Morita said of the Mustangs” victory.

Middletown (1-0 conference, 3-2 overall) received singles wins from No. 1 man Will Phelps, 6-3, 6-1 over Veronica Freitas; No. 2 Aaron Turner, 6-3, 6-1 over Josh Hebert; and No. 3 Tyler Madsen, 7-5, 6-1 over Nick Brandon.

The Phelps-Freitas battled in first singles lasted almost two hours, according to Morita.

“There were some long points,” Morita said. “We call him (Phelps) ?The Wall” because he hits everything back. He frustrates a lot of players.”

In doubles, the No. 1 Middletown team of Chris Whiting and Andrew Rotter beat Brian Tavares and K.C. White, 6-2, 6-3, and No. 2 team of Zoe Everett and Ryan Bower defeated Nate Seacrest and Tony Valdez, 7-5, 6-3.

The Mustangs return to action March 30 in Cloverdale.
