LAKEPORT — Brittany Rumfelt tossed a one-hitter and Kaila Sterbank homered for the second time in three games to lead the Clear Lake Cardinals past the Kelseyville Knights 13-0 in a five-inning North Central League I interlock softball game on Friday at Lakeport.
Rumfelt improved to 8-0 by striking out eight and walking none. She lost her bid for a no-hitter when Lauren Giusti singled sharply to right-center field with two outs in the top of the fourth inning.
Clear Lake scored four times in the bottom of the first inning, including a clutch two-out, two-run single by Kacie Hinchcliff.
“We did a good job with our situational hitting again today,” Clear Lake coach Gary Pickle said.
Losing pitcher Casey Bowlin settled down after that and allowed just one over the next three innings, that coming on Jen Carley”s RBI groundout in the fourth that made it 5-0 in the Cardinals” favor.
Clear Lake (10-0) then broke the game open with an eight-run fifth.
“In the first inning nerves got the best of us,” Kelseyville coach Greg Giusti said of his young squad, now 2-7 on the season. “In the fifth she (Bowlin) just got tired and was leaving the ball up a little bit. Before I could get someone up (in relief), they jumped on us and strung together a series of hits.
“They come at you every pitch and wear you down,” Giusti added of the Cardinals.
“I was impressed with Kelseyville,” Pickle said. “You can see they”re improving quite a bit.”
Rumfelt went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a RBI for Clear Lake. Hinchcliff, Haley Sanderson and Sam Espinoza all had two hits and two RBIs.
