ATASCADERO — What a difference a day can make. After struggling in the Lompoc Invitational on Monday, Kelseyville High”s golf team, and especially Brent Hamilton, made amends on Tuesday during the 22nd annual King of the Mountain Tournament at Chalk Mountain Golf Club.
Facing many of the same teams they squared off against on Monday, the Knights gave a much better account of themselves, according to coach John Berry.
“I was a little bit worried after Monday, but they played a whole lot better today,” Berry said. “They came back strong against pretty much the same field.”
Kelseyville had two three-man teams in the field and the No. 1 team of Hamilton, Schuyler Bloom and Nick Schaefer placed ninth in the 28-team field with 247. The No. 2 team of Hipolito Perez, Wes Stevenson and Darrin Sullivan finished 22nd with 280.
Hamilton had the fifth lowest individual round on the par-72 course, carding a 75 that included two birdies. The fifth-place finish is the lowest by a Kelseyville player during the team”s annual spring break swing through Lompoc and Atascadero since Shawn Auten finished third at Lompoc in 1997.
“It”s a nice accomplishment for him,” Berry said.
Bloom had the next lowest Kelseyville round at 85, Schaefer finished with 87 and Perez carded 88.
Led by Brandon Pierce”s low individual round of 71, Arroyo Grande won the team title with 225. Atascadero and Royal (Simi Valley) tied for second with 230.
Kelseyville, the undefeated leader in the Coastal Mountain Conference South standings, returns to action Tuesday with a South match on its home course at Adams Springs.
