The Lake County Sheriff”s Office is participating in a regional task force, made up of sheriff”s representatives from 12 California counties, which was created to address convicted sex offenders who do not comply with registration laws.

A person who has been convicted of designated sex offenses, such as rape and child molestation, is required by law to inform law enforcement of his or her address. Some convicted sex offenders fail to comply with this law and some move between jurisdictional boundaries to avoid law-enforcement scrutiny.

The California legislature has established funds for Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement (SAFE) teams. The objective of a SAFE team is to lower the number of non-compliant registrants in an area. The team”s methods range from training and education to vigorous enforcement of existing laws.

Lake County deputies are participating in the Region II SAFE Task Force, which is made up of deputy sheriffs from 12 California county sheriffs” departments. Members of probation departments, district attorneys” offices, state law enforcement agencies and federal law enforcement agencies are also participating in the task force”s activities.
