NICE — An anonymous tip about a Nice man known as Martin Sugarman lead authorities to his eventual arrest after it was discovered that he was not who he appeared to be.

Initial record searches indicated the man”s name was Martin Sugarman, said the Lake County Sheriff”s Office report. “He was issued a valid California Driver”s license in that name. He possessed a Social Security card in that name. He had purchased real property in that name. He had even initiated contact with law enforcement using that name,” writes Lt. Cecil Brown of the LCSO.

But a thumbprint revealed that his real name was James Bradley Sherman, age 47. Detectives also learned that he had been convicted of attempted voluntary manslaughter with a firearm in Los Angeles County and had been living under an alias in Lake County for about 10 years.

After Sherman was released from prison on the condition that he satisfactorily complete a period of parole, a fugitive from justice warrant was issued for his arrest in July of 1989, according to the report.

Sherman was arrested at his Nice home without incident Wednesday for violation of parole, unlawful possession of a weapon (which Brown noted was a side-handle baton), being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, and being a convicted felon in possession of ammunition.

“Further investigation will determine if Sherman violated laws regarding falsifying documents or identity theft,” writes Brown.
