CLOVERDALE — Mike Zimmerman pitched all eight innings for the win and also drove in Clear Lake”s first run with a sacrifice bunt as the Cardinals went eight innings to stun the Cloverdale Eagles 2-1 in a North Central League I South varsity baseball game at City Park in Cloverdale.
Nick Jordan”s RBI single with two outs in the top of the eighth drove in Nate Velez to snap a 1-1 tie. Zimmerman then retired the top of Cloverdale”s batting order 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the inning to cap a remarkable outing. The left-hander allowed only six hits, struck out eight and walked one.
“Zim gave us a star performance,” Clear Lake coach Brian Figg said.
The win creates a three-way tie atop the South standings as Clear Lake, Cloverdale and St. Vincent are all 2-1. The Cardinals improved to 8-5 overall.
Clear Lake grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an Alan Moses triple and Zimmerman”s RBI sacrifice bunt. Cloverdale pulled even with a run in the bottom of the sixth.
Velez went 2-for-4 for the Cardinals, who have gone ex-tra innings in each of their last two games, winning both.
