LAKEPORT — The 16th annual NCRA Founder”s Cup Race is the headliner Saturday night at the Lakeport Speedway. The race honors the Northern California Racing Association”s founding fathers, who formed the organization 42 years ago by opening tracks in both Lakeport and Ukiah.

Winners of the Founder”s Cup Race in the modified, mini-stock, bomber and bonus bomber divisions receive a special Founder”s Cup plaque and get their names engraved on the perpetual trophy that is housed at the NCRA office in Lakeport.

Also on the special events agenda for Saturday is the second annual “Cub Scout 500,” featuring Cub Scouts from Kelseyville Pack No. 145 and Lakeport Pack No. 142. The scouts will be racing in self-built cars that are foot-powered. The event features mandatory pit stops during which crews fuel the drivers (water), change their rubber (shoes), and clean their windows (faces). Each competitor has one crew member to take care of these duties.

To top off the evening, the Nostalgic Race Car Group runs both a trophy dash and a 15-lap exhibition race. This division runs old-time race cars dating as far back as the 1930s.

Gates open at the speedway, located at the Lake County Fairgrounds, at 5 p.m. and racing begins at 7 p.m. Call 274-2844 for more information or visit www.lakeportspeedway.com on the Internet.
