An introductory meeting for applicants to the City of Clearlake Vision Task Force was held Thursday, May 3 at City Hall. Interim Community Development Director Irwin Kaplan provided an overview of goals and expectations for the 40 applicants in attendance.

The Vision Task Force is charged with identifying community needs and concerns and will provide recommendations for the council”s consideration when updating the city”s General Plan.

“I see a town with incredible potential,” Kaplan said. “Growth is going to happen — it”s going to happen our way or its way.”

Applicants, diverse in community representation, were divided into two groups. One group, called the Austin Group, will take a look at issues such as conservation, transportation and circulation, housing, environmental protection and infrastructure. The Redbud Group will evaluate concerns dealing with education, youth, the elderly, noise, economic development and marketing, open space and safety.

Each of the groups will meet at 6 p.m. at the Clearlake Senior/Community Center on a weekly basis. The Austin Group will meet on Wednesdays and the Redbud Group will meet on Thursdays.

Kaplan laid down the ground rules for the task force members. He encouraged active participation without contention among participants. “Don”t let any individual dampen your spirit,” he advised. “Think big. Think positive. Think about what makes this city special.”

Following individual introductions of task force members, the group brainstormed on issues of concern. A few concerns identified included protection of the lake, protection of oak trees, improving the quality of life for children, preserving the rural quality of the area, environment, lake access, affordable housing and recreation.
