Red”s Construction Mariners” Brandon Thomas sent one over the fence in a bout against Redbud Community Hospital Cardinals to earn rights to the first grand slam home run that Southshore Little League has seen in a long time.
“Brandon hit a grand slam homerun over the fence to win the game, 7-2,” said Marie Moon, SSLL statistician. “I cannot remember in my five years of scorekeeping and being involved in Little League, another grand slam. Way to go Brandon!”
The contest between the Mariners and the Cardinals was a drawn-out battle. The teams first met on April 23. After eight innings of play, the game was called due to darkness with the score tied at two runs apiece. The teams continued the game the first week of May. “Both teams had outstanding pitching in the battle,” Moon reported. “Abe Gonzalez and Jon Duncan combined for 16 strike-outs and allowed only three hits, while Jake Peters and JoJo Logue combined for the Mariners for 20 strike-outs and allowed only two hits.”
The Mariners clinched the first half of the 2007 season. The team will meet the winner of the second half to determine the team to represent SSLL for the Tournament of Champions.
Last week in Major League action, the Mendo Mill Athletics beat the Dr. Eagle”s Animal Hospital Giants, 14-11. Talle Jones and Daniel Eagle combined on the mound for the Giants, striking out seven. Eagle also hit 2×4 for the contest. Richard Tucker, Zef Roofener and Jesse Green combined for the Athletics, striking out 13.
The Mariners shut out the Cardinals, 10-0. Jake Peters pitched the entire game four innings for the Mariners, striking out 10 and allowing no hits. He walked one. Duncan and Thaddeus Wetmore pitched for the Cardinals, allowing eight hits and striking out nine.
The Mariners enjoyed yet another win over the Giants, 14-9. Eagle and Tony Fonseca combined on the mound for the Giants, striking out 11. For the Mariners, it was Peters and Logue combining for 11 strike-outs. The big hit of the day came from the bat of Logue who went 3×4 with a single, a double and the second grand slam homerun of the 2007 season.
In Girls Softball, the Southshore Junior League team stands at three wins, two losses. In Major League softball, the Heat, sponsored by Cecil”s Take and Bake Pizza, beat the Cactus Grill Racers, 15-5, with Bailey Serpa going 3×3 for the Racers.
Konoctees Riptide beat the Tony Bordessa Construction Armadillos, 9-7, while the Heat beat the P&L Auto Body Bandits, 17-11.
Major League softball standings are as follows: Bandits, 1-7; Heat, 7-1; Riptide, 6-1; Racers, 2-6 and one tie; and Armadillos, 3-5 and one tie.
In Minor League action, the Salmina”s Floor to Ceiling Angels beat the Sanders Construction Mets, 17-10; Freedom Heating & Air Devil Rays beat the Jim Jonas, Inc. Cubs, 10-9; the Angels beat the Devil Rays, 11-9; and the Cubs beat the Mets, 17-10.
In Junior League action, the Lakeshore Lions Dodgers shut-out the JT Photography Blue Jays, 16-0. The Dodgers Corey Boyce went 1×2 on a long home run over the fence of the junior field that landed in the lot behind the Travelodge.
The PSI World White Sox fell to the Foods, Etc. Reds, 9-5. The White Sox also fell to the Blue Jays, 21-19. “It was a close game, tied up at 17 in the sixth inning,” reported Moon. “Both teams had used several pitchers just to get that far. It was a very exciting game.”
