Bush should not have commuted the sentence of Mr. Lewis. The crime that Bush considered minor enough to allow Mr. Libby to have his sentence commuted, a slap on the wrist, was not a “minor” crime.
It consisted of perjury, obstruction of justice at the national level, and the CIA leak case that destroyed the undercover identity of a CIA opertive, Valerie Plame.
Bush didn”t want to mete out a “harsh sentence” for Libby. But it is a “harsh sentence” for citizens to find that Bush would treat serious crimes as if they were trivial.
