There is a term used in the news, both print and electronic that has been bothering me for some time. It is “friendly fire”. I find it hard to believe that anyone with a weapon in their hand and killing on their mind can be described as “friendly”.
I think a much more descriptive phrase would be “misplaced fire”. I have to believe that men in combat are working together as a team protecting one another while trying to get the job done. However I am sure, in the heat of a battle, there are times when precautions and being able to check to see where all the team members are becomes impossible. It grieves me deeply to know that even with the best of training sometimes things go wrong, but to call a misplaced bullet “friendly” isn”t right. There are no friendly bullets, just misplaced shots.
