COBB MOUNTAIN — Doug Quinones of Hidden Valley Lake successfully defended his title in the 14th annual Lake County Junior Golf Championship on Wednesday at Adams Springs Golf Course on Cobb Mountain.
And Lisa Copeland of Hidden Valley Lake nailed down her fourth straight tournament title in style, shooting a tournament-record 77 that featured an eagle two on the 270-yard, par-4 sixth hole.
Quinones, a two-time all-Coastal Mountain Conference South golfer at Middletown High School, will be representing Northern California in the NorCal-SoCal Junior Team matches this coming weekend at SCGA Golf Course in Murieta. He opened play at Adams Springs with a 3-over-par 37 on the front nine, but came roaring back with a 3-under-par 31 on the back nine for an 18-hole total of 68, holding off Kelseyville”s Nick Schaefer for the title. Quinones” back-nine push featured birdies on the 12th, 15th and 17th holes.
While Quinones defended the title he won in 2006, it was his third overall Lake County Junior Championship. He also won in 2004. A talented power player, he used his length off the tee to set up his birdies on the back nine.
Schaefer, also at two-time All-CMC South golfer, played steady golf throughout his round, making birdies on the third, 14th and 15th holes. He finished with 71 (35-36).
Another Kelseyville High golf team member, Jonathan Bridges, came in third with a solid round of 76.
14-15 boys
Blaine Ruggio of Middletown captured the 14-15 boys” title with a 91, edging Peter Wotherspoon of Kelseyville by a single stroke. Josh Sumpter of Cloverdale came in third with 96 and Tyler Drake of Clear Lake Riviera was fourth with 98.
12-13 boys
Stone Phillips of Lakeport won the 12-13 boys” title by shooting a 102 that was good for a five-stroke margin of victory over runner-up Wyatt Ferrell of Lakeport. Max Whitaker of Clear Lake Riviera finished third with 122 and Max Huff of Clear Lake Riviera was fourth with 123.
9-12 boys
Aaron Waldrop of Cobb shot a nine-hole score of 55 to win the 9-12 boys” title.
Girls
Copeland”s eagle on the sixth hole was made possible when the incoming Middletown High School sophomore drove the green. She then sank a curling, 15-foot downhill putt.
Saralyn Petricevich of Stockton, a varsity golfer for Linden High School won the 16-17 girls” title with 92. And Liz Berry of Kelseyville won the 14-15 title with a 103.
Twenty-four golfers participated in the Lake County Junior, which is sponsored by the Kelseyville Lions Club, the Adams Springs Men”s Golf Club, and the Lucich, Mullins and Berry families.
