LAKEPORT ? The Kiwanas of Lakeport donated $500 to the Veterans of Foreign Wars “Treats for Troops” program at a 6:00 p.m. event at the Lakeport Senior Center on Monday. President of the Lakeport Kiwanas Bill Knoll handed the check to Veterans of Foreign Wars post 2015 senior vice-commander Robert Deppe who said the money comes two days after a donation of $250 to the program from City Center Realty of Lakeport.
The funds pay for items to be sent overseas to troops in Iraq, according to Deppe, who says they hear feedback from soldiers as to what they would like to receive in the care-packages, which include a wide variety of items such as artificial tears that help the soldiers combat fiercely dry desert winds that blow sand in their faces, as well as food, powdered drink mix, and personal hygiene accessories. “They get all sorts of miscellaneous necessary items,” said Knoll.
Deppe added, “They need extra things like artificial tears because they”re out there in the desert all the time. We get feedback from them telling us ?we need less shampoo and more toothpaste” and things like that.”
Deppe and his wife Lisa Deppe head the “T for T” program, and shop around town for the needed items before they are packaged by the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and sent in the mail to the troops. For more information on how to donate to “Treats for Troops,” contact Robert Deppe: (707) 263-6624.
