A good article concerning the health of Clear Lake in the Aug 7th
edition of the Lake County Record-Bee was written by Elizabeth
Wilson. I hope that there will be a follow up article.
I read Rachael Carlson”s book in the 1960”s and have enjoyed Clear
Lake”s waters for 25 years. Fourteen of those years I was a swimmer,
boater, beachcomber, and wildlife watcher. While more U.C. Davis
research is needed and the U.S. EPA needs to complete its studies and
solutions to Sulfur bank leaching, all lovers of Clearlake can use more
information and diligence.
I applaud the North Shore Fire Protection District, as well as Cal
Fire (CDF), and all of the alert and well-trained professionals who
have had success preventing a South Tahoe type fire here this summer.
I applaud local and visiting volunteers, aided and organized by
our local Sierra Club, for having greatly reduced the fire danger right
above the lake, the Black Forest along Soda Bay.
Our lake improvements also are the result of more awareness
and action taken by volunteers and government representatives.
A few examples of these efforts are the Basin Zoo Project, the Full
Circle Plan, the Middle Creek Restoration Plan, the Aquatic Plant
Management Plan, and the General Plan.
Even Lake Tahoe, which receives lots of restoration money from the
government, has not seen improved clarity and pureness. Clearlake is
getting clearer but there is a lot more to do.
