SANTA ROSA — Kayla Welton scored twice and had two assists and freshman Kaitlyn August added two goals and an assist as the Middletown Mustangs beat Summerfield Waldorf 9-1 in a non-league varsity girls” soccer match on Thursday in Santa Rosa.
It was the season opener for both teams and the first game ever for Summerfield Waldorf, which added the sport this year.
Middletown coach Louise Owens substituted liberally throughout the match to give her many freshmen players their first taste of high school competition.
“I even started a freshman,” Owens said of Natalie Diaz, who had a goal and an assist in her first game.
“They did well, they got the job done,” Owens said in summing up the Mustangs” initial effort of the 2007 season.
Kelsey Welton, Kaitlyn Agapoff, Amber Begley and Krista Turner also scored goals for Middletown (1-0). Teina Moore had two assists.
