UPDATED:

MIDDLETOWN – District 1 Supervisor Ed Robey said since the news came out about his retirement, he”s had a lot of people ask why.

One thing he said he wants to make clear is that he”s not retiring – yet.

“I will continue working full-time plus as a county supervisor until my term is up,” said Robey, adding that the new supervisor – whoever that may be – will take his seat in January of 2009.

As for why he isn”t running again, Robey said he”s had a good run and it is time to move on to better things.

“I think after 12 years it”s time to give someone else a turn. Besides that I am not a career politician,” said Robey. By the end of this term he will have served three consecutive terms as District 1 Supervisor, putting his career tally at 12 years.

Robey said health does not play a role in his decision not to run again. He said that regular check-ups give him a clean bill of health.

As for what he will do with the 50 to 60 hours he currently puts in as a public servant, Robey said he plans on staying involved in local activities and doing some writing.

He was coy about exactly what kind of writing that would be, however.

“It”s been a real personal growth experience being a county supervisor,” said Robey.

“You learn a lot about yourself and human nature in general by dealing with so many different people and institutions. You don”t go there to promote your own issues, you have to be responsive to people you”ve never met.

You have to learn how to understand other people”s points of view. You grow up and have your own point of view, but this forces you to open up to other people”s points of view. It”s been a fascinating experience.”
