Lower Lake High School is abandoning its practice of making athletes ineligible to play if they have earned a single “F.”
Athletic director Marty Udy and coach Reed Leiferman asked the Konocti school board this week to change the athletic eligibility policy. As it turned out, however, the “No F” requirement is not part of official board policy as adopted in November 2005; it was a practice implemented by the school in addition to official policy.
Asked what, if any, action should be taken by the board, “Direct the high school to bring its practice into alignment with board policy,” suggested board member Anita Gordon.
Konocti Unified School District sets the same requirements for athletic activity as for extracurricular or cocurricular activities, according to Board Policy 6145.2.
A student must maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and maintain minimum progress toward meeting high school graduation requirements.
KUSD is also a member of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), which additionally requires qualifying athletes to be currently enrolled in at least 20 semester credits of work and to have been passing in the equivalent of at least 20 semester credits of work at the completion of the most recent grading period.
Official KUSD policies can be read at the district”s Web site, www.konoctiusd.lake.12.ca.us.
