MIDDLETOWN — Sensing opportunity, the Middletown Mustangs found only frustration Wednesday afternoon in a 1-0 loss to the St. Vincent Mustangs during varsity girls” soccer action at Middletown High School.

The North Central League I interlock battle matched two former NCL II foes and Middletown coach Louise Owens, while giving all due respect to St. Vincent, said the small-school powerhouse from Petaluma appears “to be down” this year.

“They seem down to me, so that makes it a little frustrating,” Owens said. “It was a very good opportunity for us to beat them.”

St. Vincent scored the game”s lone goal in the 15th minute and the score remained unchanged the final 65 minutes.

“Kayla (Welton) and Amber (Preusser) had some good opportunities there at the end of the second half, but it didn”t happen,” Owens said. “And the St. Vincent goalie made a great save there near the end.”

Both teams had seven shots on goal.

Owens said she didn”t know how much the absence of forward Krista Turner (calf injury) and midfielder Natalie Diaz (concussion) hurt the team, but said it certainly didn”t help.

“They both are vital to our offense,” Owens said.

The Middletown coach did praise the effort of Zoe Everett, who split time between offense and defense.

“She did a great job,” Owens said. “She made a couple of nice attacks.”

Middletown is 2-1-1 on the season.
