In his “Democrats unable or unwilling to end war” column (Record-Bee, Sept. 12), Pat Buchanan tries to make the Democrats look impotent by throwing in key words or leaving out key facts to make himself and the Republican Party look like the good guys.

As an example the word “unwilling” should be part of the Republican credo. The Republicans are unwilling to vote against Bush and his war mongering. They say they are but the facts show otherwise.

Part of the legality that Mr. Buchanan and the Republicans ignore is the fact that the Democrats need a two thirds vote to override a Presidential veto. That would require some Republicans to vote against Bush along with all the Democrats. It”s not going to happen.

The Democrats will need to get more delegates elected to override Bush”s veto power. The other possibility is that enough Republicans will vote with the Democrats to override Bush”s veto. Like that is going to happen.

Buchanan uses words like intimidated to make the Democrats seem weak. Then he goes on to say the Democrats were stampeded into voting for the war in 2002. That”s an outright lie. Bush and his administration lied to Congress and the Senate about why this nation had to go to war with Iraq. Buchanan said Reagan called Vietnam a “noble cause”. If you are willing to read the entire history about Vietnam”s quest for independence that started before World War II, you might have a different picture.

Buchanan”s last blurb is ? in my opinion ? a waste of paper. He talks as though America owns the Middle East and if we don”t continue this war who”s going to take the flack for “losing” the Middle East. It was never ours to lose. He is obviously not a historian or someone who knows how our country works politically or has any problem not telling the truth or we wouldn”t have seen his ridiculous column. He would have been to embarrassed to put it in writing.
