ARCATA — Clear Lake”s young varsity volleyball team turned in an up-and-down effort Saturday at the Arcata Tournament, winning two of its four pool-play matches before falling to McKinleyville in the playoff round.

“We had five matches up there and were able to work a lot of the kinks out,” Clear Lake coach Marci Psalmonds said.

Clear Lake fell 25-11, 25-9 to Mendocino and 25-19, 25-19 to Brookings of Oregon in its first two pool-play matches, then came back to beat Hoopa 25-18, 25-15 and Ferndale 25-23, 25-17 in its final two pool matches.

In the single-elimination playoffs, Upper Lake fell 25-15, 25-14 to McKinleyville.

Jesse Sondag led the Cardinals with 27 kills, 22 service points and seven aces. Kirsten Wascom added 21 kills and seven blocks and Danielle Howard had 20 kills.

Clear Lake plays Anderson Valley tonight in Boonville.
