Special teams — Upper Lake placekicker Luis Santana booted a 26-yard field goal to give the Cougars” a short-lived 10-8 lead against Fort Bragg.
Defense — The Clear Lake Cardinals forced five turnovers in their lopsided win over Kelseyville. Erik Jameson led the way with a fumble recovery and an interception. Lower Lake”s Chris Sisco recovered two fumbles against St. Helena. His teammate, Angel Macias, picked off two Saints passes.

First time he”s been on the winning end — Senior Steven Arson of the Lower Lake football team experienced his first taste of victory at the varsity level on Friday night when the Trojans beat the St. Helena Saints. Lower Lake went 0-10 his sophomore year and 1-9 last year, but he didn”t suit up for the team”s only win (against Cloverdale).
Don”t go there — Clear Lake was not trying to run up the score on Kelseyville late during Friday”s contest at Kelseyville. The Cardinals had just scored a touchdown to go up 48-12 when a poor snap on the conversion kick prompted holder Jameson Holder to roll out and roll into the end zone for the two-point conversion.
Not wasting any time — Clear Lake”s first three plays from scrimmage in the second half produced two touchdowns against Kelseyville.
Not wasting any time (advanced edition) — Fort Bragg scored touchdowns on consecutive plays from scrimmage in the second quarter against Upper Lake. Both TDs followed interceptions.
Considering the situation, not bad — Pressed into service because of an injury to starter Mike Duman, Kelseyville quarterback Justin Lilly turned in a solid effort against Clear Lake, completing 4 of 7 passes for 74 yards and a TD.
Keeping busy — Middletown linebacker Eric Tomko was in on 18 tackles and had a sack against St. Vincent.
Talk fast — Our new and improved phone system at the Record-Bee has cut the amount of time coaches have to leave messages in half. While we”re trying to straighten out the problem, if you have to leave results, do it quick or call back and talk to a real person. Sorry for the unintended inconvenience.
JV football results — We print them as we get them. If we don”t get them, we don”t print them. Kind of poetic.
Could work — Someone suggested the other day that Clear Lake call its homefield Red Card Stadium or, if you like, home of the Red Cards, which also works since Clear Lake”s color is red.
Hey, it”s my column … and my daughter — Sarah Sumpter of Healdsburg High School won the Junior-Senior girls” race on Saturday during the Viking Opener at Spring Lake in Santa Rosa. She set a school record in the process, completing the 2-mile course in 11 minutes, 53 seconds. Teams from throughout the North Coast Section took part in the cross country event, including runners from Lower Lake, Upper Lake and Middletown high schools.
Air Foltmer — Two weeks into the 2007 season, the Middletown Mustangs have scored four touchdowns, none rushing.
