MIDDLETOWN — Amber Preusser”s goal in the third minute of the first half stood up on Tuesday afternoon as the Middletown Mustangs gained a measure of satisfaction by shutting out the Clear Lake Cardinals 1-0 in a North Central League I interlock varsity girls” soccer game at Middletown.

Middletown lost to Clear Lake twice last season, 3-1 in the regular season at Lakeport and 4-2 in the opening round of the North Coast Section Class A playoffs at Middletown.

“It was an exciting game,” Middletown coach Louise Owens said. “There were a lot of opportunities for both teams.”

Preusser took a long pass from Middletown keeper Kelsey Welton early in the first half and blasted a shot into the goal to put the Mustangs ahead to stay.

“They out-shot us in the first half (8-5), but we out-shot them for the game (13-12),” Owens said.

Welton and Zoe Everett anchored Middletown”s defense, according to Owens.

“Kelsey made some great saves, especially in the first half,” Owens said. “Zoe did an amazing job ? they all did.”

Middletown improved to 3-1-2 on the season while Clear Lake slipped to 3-2-2.

“Clear Lake”s always been the dominant team, not only in the county but in the section, so this win is a good confidence builder for us,” Owens said.

“We missed a lot of easy shots,” Upper Lake coach Anna Santana said. “They did what they had to do today, but just barely.”
