The citizens of Lake County should be so proud of Minnie Cannon School Principal, Tom Hoskins, teachers and students for their excellent achievement of raising the SMART test scores. Believe me that is no easy task in this county where unfortunately many children have no support at home to do their homework, to achieve good grades, to challenge themselves for the hope of a bright future. These poor children would surely fall through the cracks if it wasn”t for the incredible efforts of Minnie Cannon School.

Instead of ridicule and jaded comments that seem “fear-based,” we should give praise and thanks for a job well done. In a recent letter in the Record-Bee, it was stated “he is teaching prejudice and hate,” and I was so appalled by the negativity and absurdity of that statement. I see it just the opposite.

Mr. Hoskins and staff are teaching pride, team spirit, sense of community and most importantly self esteem. We need more hard working, dedicated, passionate principals just like him. Lighten up and give credit where credit is due.
