An 88-year-old Clearlake man hit by a car as he stepped into on Old Highway 53 last week died of his injuries Friday, according to a Clearlake Police Department press release.
Clearlake resident Toni Maier, 55, was driving south on Old Highway 53 near Hillcrest Avenue when the man stepped out into the roadway, according to the CPD report. She was driving a 1992 Subaru sedan.
Maier did not see the man until she hit him, according to Lt. Mike Herman of the CPD. The man went up onto Maier”s hood and was thrown to the pavement when Maier stopped her car. Witnesses at the scene said Maier was driving the speed limit. Witness statements and evidence on the scene indicate that Maier could not have avoided the collision, according to the CPD.
A Monday autopsy is expected to determine the cause of the Clearlake man”s death. His name is being withheld pending notification to his family.
