UPPER LAKE — The serving of Darlena White and Amber Shoffeitt proved to be the difference on Thursday night as the Lower Lake Trojans rallied to beat the Upper Lake Cougars 22-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21, 15-7 in a North Central League I interlock varsity volleyball match at Upper Lake High School.
It was the third meeting this season between the two schools and Lower Lake”s second win.
“They served very well,” Upper Lake coach Sandy Coatney said. “They were firing them in there.”
White led the Trojans with nine aces and also had seven kills. Shoffeitt finished with four aces and seven kills.
“They”ve got great serves,” Lower Lake coach Danessa Udy said of White and Shoffeitt. “I just wish they were a little more consistent with their serves.”
Udy said Upper Lake”s serving wasn”t bad either as the Cougars had 11 aces in all, including five from Hannah Johnson, who also led the team with 10 kills and 19 digs.
“Amber and Darlena can pound the ball (at the net) and they were, but it”s not like Upper Lake was backing away,” Udy said. “They did a good job getting the ball back up and passing. We had more dink kills than hard arm-swing kills.”
Caity Falge had 14 digs and nine kills for Upper Lake while setter Samantha Bullard logged 21 assists.
For the Trojans, Tashee Denson and Renita Gilliam each had five kills and two blocks and Elisabeth Fortina had six kills.
“It was good matchup between these two teams,” Coatney said. “In the end we just made a few more mistakes than they did.”
