KELSEYVILLE — Huston, we don”t have a problem.
Kelseyville High School senior fullback Josh Huston gained 187 yards — for the second week in a row — on Friday night, including a 41-yard touchdown run that opened the scoring in the Knights” 20-7 win over the Upper Lake Cougars at Kelseyville High School.
“He”s just a horse,” Kelseyville coach Thad Owens said of Huston”s 28-carry night. “He runs hard, sees the hole well, feels the pressure well.”
Kelseyville (1-3) snapped a three-game losing streak to start the season and also provided Owens with his first victory as the Knights” head coach. Upper Lake (1-3) suffered its third straight setback.
“I”m happy with the win, but I still think we have a long way to go,” Owens said.
Even with Upper Lake keying on Huston, who rushed for 187 yards in a loss at St. Helena on Sept. 21, the Cougars couldn”t stop him.
“They had eight men in the box, but he still had another big game,” Owens said.
Huston”s touchdown run and Justin Lilly”s extra-point kick staked the Knights to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
“It was just a lead play, it wasn”t complex,” Owens said. “He found the cutback seam and they (Cougars) were overpursuing on the play.”
Upper Lake tied the game on Rob Avery”s 37-yard run and Luis Santana”s PAT kick later in the same quarter.
Kelseyville pushed back in front 13-7 on Mike Duman”s 9-yard run in the second quarter. James Ducoty”s 1-yard run in the fourth quarter gave the Knights some insurance.
Kelseyville gained all 257 of its yards on the ground.
The Knights intercepted two passes on defense and registered six quarterback sacks, two of them by Troy Davis.
Upper Lake also had two interceptions. Other Cougar stats were not available at press time.
