ST. HELENA — Coming off a 48-0 loss to the Middletown Mustangs a week earlier, it didn”t appear as though things could get any worse for the slumping Upper Lake Cougars.

They did.

The St. Helena Saints built a 47-7 halftime lead, which turned out to be the final score, as they routed Upper Lake in the North Central League I South opener for both of these varsity football teams on Friday night at St. Helena. The loss is the Cougars” fifth straight and their schedule doesn”t get any easier the rest of the way. In fact, it gets tougher. Upper Lake will play St. Vincent (4-2), Willits (3-3), Clear Lake (5-0-1) and Cloverdale (4-2) in its final four games.

St. Helena snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 2-4 overall. Upper Lake is now 1-5.

No details or statistics were reported to the Record-Bee by Upper Lake coach Airic Guerrero.

The Cougars host St. Vincent, a 26-7 winner over Cloverdale in another NCL I South game Friday night, a week from today.
