MIDDLETOWN — Unless the Fort Bragg Timberwolves drop their final two games, the Middletown Mustangs will not win a third straight North Central League I North championship in girls” soccer.
Fort Bragg scored with 10 minutes remaining on Monday to beat Middletown 2-1 at Middletown High School.
Fort Bragg (5-1) owns a two-game lead over Middletown (3-3), which has now lost twice to the Timberwolves this season.
“This was a much closer game than the last time we played Fort Bragg,” Middletown coach Louise Owens said of a 2-0 loss at Fort Bragg back on Oct. 2. “It was a very exciting game and it could have easily gone the other way.”
The two teams completed the first half tied at 1. Middletown”s goal came on a Kayla Welton shot assisted by Emily Beckwith, who moved from defense to offense.
“She played a fantastic game,” Owens said of Beckwith, whose position change was intended to give the Mustangs a better match-up on offense. “Emily has size, skills and speed and she made a big difference.”
Middletown keeper Kelsey Welton made several saves to keep the Mustangs in the game, according to Owens.
“Some of them were pretty amazing,” Owens said of a handful of Fort Bragg shots stopped by Welton.
