Other than name, has Kelseyville been disrespected?
Let”s stand back and visualize what the area would have looked like if Kelsey (or someone else) had not done his dastardly deeds and the Europeans had not come to this country.
Could it be that the area would look like the properties outside of Lakeport along Soda Bay Road? Does this area look to you like the people care about the land? More like it looks like they squander what they have. Have the peoples who were living here made a pig sty out of the land? Yes.
The tribes in Lake County were gatherers. It is na?ve to believe that had the Europeans not come to this country the gatherer tribes would have continued as they had lived. Sooner or later the warring tribes would have over-run the gatherers and they would have ceased to exist.
Each time I go past the area mentioned above I recall the public service announcement against littering from the 70s when the proud Native American is seen with a tear running down his cheek and saying, “Please don”t litter.” Obviously a different kind of Native American.
It is difficult to give credence to the need to change the name of Kelseyville for some historical reason when those who want to do so have a history of their own that shows disrespect for the land they live on.
