The Clearlake Police Department is working toward establishing a K-9 program within the department. A fund raising effort is currently underway. The approximate cost to cover the purchase of a new canine, equipment and training expenses is $20,000.
The department recently accepted donations from two local businesses totaling $1,300. Krissy Thornton and Giuseppe Ressa, owners of Dragonfly Deli in Lower Lake; presented the department with a check for $700. Julie Avila, representing Clearlake Wal-Mart, handed over a check for $600.
According to the department, the implementation of a K-9 program will mean added protection for residents of the community. In addition, the team will be available for educational appearances with schools, organizations and civic groups for purposes of putting on general demonstrations and to discuss the police K-9 role, child safety with respect to dogs and other safety tips specific to the group audience and interest.
“For the police department, a K-9 is a loyal partner and a tremendous help in the fight against crime,” said Sgt. Tim Celli. “Dogs can be used for many situations including, but not limited to building searches, tracking of criminals and lost children, locating evidence and property, personal identification of suspects, prowler calls and most importantly of all, narcotics detection.
“The use of a strategically deployed K-9 team can save hundreds of man hours for police officers because a K-9 team can conduct a search quickly and effectively, resulting in increased officer safety, the apprehension of dangerous suspects and increased safety to the citizens of Clearlake,” Celli concluded.
Other monetary donations for the program have been received from Kabatin Plumbing, of Clearlake; Ken Celli, of Lower Lake; and Gary and Kristin Spraktes, of Perfect T”s in Clearlake.
Anyone wishing to contribute to the program may send their check, payable to the Clearlake Police Department K-9 Fund, to the Clearlake Police Department, 14050 Olympic Drive, Clearlake CA 95422.
