KELSEYVILLE — Rebounding from a 35-0 loss at home to Middletown the week before, the Willits Wolverines plowed through the muck and mud Friday night at Maize Field to beat the Kelseyville Knights 26-0 in a North Central League I North varsity football game.
While the horrible field conditions benefited neither team, Kelseyville coach Thad Owens said he”s never seen a field in such bad shape as Maize Field.
“The worst field I”ve ever seen,” Owens said. “It must have been 4 inches under water. The players were so muddy that it was hard to tell which team they were on.”
Owens said he wasn”t using the poor playing conditions as a crutch for his team”s sixth loss in seven games this season.
“The reason we lost the game is because they played better than we did,” Owens said.
All four of Willits” touchdowns came on the ground. The Wolverines, who squared their North record at 1-1 while improving to 4-3 overall, led 14-0 after one quarter and 20-0 at halftime. The team”s running backs did have to change the spikes on their cleats during the intermission, according to Owens.
“They were too long, illegal,” he said.
The two teams combined for 10 lost fumbles, six by Kelseyville.
All 99 of the Knights” yards on offense came on the ground. Charlie Anderson led the way with 36 yards on five carries.
Kelseyville is 0-2 in the North standings and 1-6 overall.
Troy Davis and J.J. Pine each had two sacks for the Knights, who travel to Lower Lake next week to play the Trojans, now led by former Kelseyville coach Stan Weiper.
