KELSEYVILLE ? Two state parks will say goodbye to long-time rangers Val and Tom Nixon when they retire in December.
Each has been employed by the Clear Lake Sector of the California Department of Parks and Recreation for 22 years. Tom Nixon, a ranger at Anderson Marsh State Historic Park in Lower Lake and Val Nixon, a ranger at Clear Lake State Park in Kelseyville, have collectively worked for State Parks for 57 years.
The Nixon”s relocated to Lake County in 1985 after having been employed at the busy coastal parks of Southern California for several years. They raised their children, Matt and Lauren, at their home in Kelseyville, according to a press release.
Both of the Nixon”s are recognized by the California State Parks as being excellent Generalist Rangers with skills in law enforcement, resource management and interpretation. They have served the community as top-notch interpreters, having led hundreds of school programs, campfire programs and special events at both parks, Palmer said. “Tom and Val, with their musical ability and sense of humor, have provided educational and entertaining performances throughout their long careers as State Park rangers,” Palmer said. “The Department of Parks and Recreation and the Clear Lake Sector employees bid them a fond farewell and a happy retirement. Without a doubt, Tom and Val will continue to be involved in the natural aspects of Lake County and beyond.”
