UKIAH – A Nice resident was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after he was injured in a crash on Highway 20 Wednesday, according to public information officer Robert Simas of the Ukiah area California Highway Patrol.
Richard Bernard, 60, was driving a 1988 Ford Aerostar east on Highway 20 at approximately 3:30 p.m. at an unknown speed.
“Due to his extreme level of intoxication, he allowed his vehicle to veer off the roadway,” Simas said. Bernard”s van hit the guardrail on the south side of the Russian River Bridge, then continued “out of control, crossed both lanes and struck a concrete bridge rail” on the north side, Simas said. The van then veered back into the eastbound lane, hitting a guardrail on the south side and came to rest.
Bernard was taken to Ukiah Valley Medical Center with minor cuts lacerations. Simas said Bernard was eventually released and booked into the Mendocino County Jail on a DUI charge.
