LAKEPORT — St. Helena clinched the outright North Central League I South varsity volleyball championship with a 21-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-17 win over the Clear Lake Cardinals on Thursday night in Lakeport.
St. Helena (7-1) needed a win to avoid a co-championship with St. Vincent (6-2). Clear Lake finishes 3-5 in Marci Psalmonds” first season as the Cardinals” head coach.
“They whooped us in three last time, so it was a good ending,” Psalmonds said. “We played pretty well.”
Freshman Jesse Sondag once again led the Cardinals with 21 kills. She also had seven service points, three aces and five digs.
Setter Katie Reynolds added 20 assists and Claire Mansell had 11 points and eight digs.
Upper Lake def. Cloverdale in four
At Upper Lake, the host Cougars dropped the first game but won the next three to beat Cloverdale in the season finale for both teams, 21-25, 25-18, 25-16, 27-25.
“They played a great game tonight and were really pumped up for it,” Upper Lake coach Sandy Coatney said of his players.
Both teams end up 2-6 in the South standings.
Upper Lake trailed 24-17 in game four and fought off several game points.
“We had some really key serving,” Coatney said. “Sam Bullard had six in a row.”
Bullard, the Cougars” setter, finished with 32 assists. Four-year varsity veteran Rebecca Grupe closed out her career with 11 kills and two blocks.
Caity Falge and Cierra Peel had six kills each.
and Dani Gudmundson had five kills and three blocks.
