Highlights

Special teams — Mike Duman”s 44-yard punt return gave Kelseyville a quick 6-0 lead against St. Vincent.

Defense — Jameson Holder”s interception for Clear Lake in the fourth quarter against St. Helena was the team”s 18th of the season. Going into Friday”s game, the Cardinals” 17 interceptions led the entire North Coast Section. Middletown”s Tyler Owen and Lower Lake”s Steven Arson each were in on 12 tackles Friday night.

Deuces are wild — Lower Lake”s Angel Macias had two interceptions against Middletown. Clear Lake”s Jameson Holder ran for two touchdowns and passed for two touchdowns against St. Helena. Holder also wears No. 2.

Tempers flare — St. Helena and Clear Lake combined for 229 yards in penalties Friday night in Lakeport. There were late hits and unsportsmanlike-conduct penalties for all occasions.

Undefeated — Clear Lake completes the regular season 9-0-1, the school”s first undefeated regular season since Rik Hayes, the team”s offensive coordinator, played for the Cardinals back in 1973.

Unbelievable — Yeah, that”s not bad for your first season as head coach. Stan Weiper leads Lower Lake to its first winning season since 1997, its first league title since 1996 and its first playoff appearance since 1995.

Available for hire — Stan Weiper, for a nominal consultation fee, can also fix your ailing business.

Keeping stats in the rain — Is like eating soup with a fork.

Nice job Lower Lake volleyball — Coach Danessa Udy led the Trojans to the NCL I North title this season. The Trojans are home tonight at 7 p.m. to play McKinleyville in the opening round of the Division IV playoffs.

Thanks to all the coaches who phone — Win, lose or draw, most of the county”s fall sports coaches phoned in their results during the course of the season, something the Record-Bee greatly appreciates. The volleyball coaches did the best, football and cross country were a close second, girls” soccer was next and boys” soccer was last on the list.

Sportsmanship award — To the St. Helena fan who wanted Clear Lake quarterback Jameson Holder”s head on a platter, and let everyone know it as loudly as he could. He probably drives a Chevy.

That”s quite a ring — The Mendocino College Hall of Fame ring worn by Clear Lake offensive coordinator Rik Hayes.

Getting closer and closer — The 14th annual Record-Bee Hoop Classic boys” basketball tournament takes place Dec. 10-15 at Clear Lake High School in Lakeport. The tournament features all of the county”s varsity and junior varsity teams competing in a round-robin format. A name change may be coming in the near future. Tournament schedules will go out to all athletic directors this week.

JV update — Clear Lake”s JVs knocked off previously undefeated St. Helena 42-6 on Friday night to win the outright NCL I South title. Both teams brought 3-0 league records into the game. Both teams also finish 9-1.

Streaks — Clear Lake is 13-0-1 in its last 14 games. Upper Lake closed the season with nine straight losses and didn”t score a touchdown in its final four. Middletown will miss the playoffs for the first time since 1998.

Milo Meyer update — He”s so good that people are delivering him beer nowadays.

My condolences to the Nolan family — For losing patriarch Dick Nolan, former 49ers head coach, who died on Sunday.

My condolences to Nolan family, postscript — For losing son Mike Nolan as 49ers head coach (just call it early condolences pending the end of the current season).

Next 49ers coach? — Stan Weiper brings the veer to Candlestick and saves a once-proud offense that has thoroughly lost its way.

Raiders update — Still horrible.

Mascot update — Will Kelseyville”s football team return as the Knights in 2008 or the Indians? Stay tuned.

Truth hurts — A grandmother of an Upper Lake player was unhappy I referred to the team as “going nowhere.”
