Newspaper accounts so far, have not reported whether or not this murder was specifically because of his sex offender status. According to published accounts, these guys knew each other and the attacker has a prior history of violence.
If he, the attacker even mentioned it, the sex offender excuse is likely just that, to make himself seem justified. The relatively small number of violent sex offenders have killed more children (and adults) than the relatively large number of non-offenders that have attacked sex offenders in any way including murder.
Megan”s Law helps non-offenders manage their activities and the activities of their children so they do not become another missing child. Isn”t it about our children? The law is not about preventing recidivism, except for the possibility the offender trying to repeat is unable to isolate a victim.
Thus, by default, they are unable or to repeat their crime, which is the point of Megan”s Law. Preventing recidivism by the voluntary actions of the sex offender has not been successful as sex offenses, especially violent ones, are rarely curable or manageable by the offender. Megan”s Law is to protect our children first ? as it should be.
