FAIRFIELD — The Lower Lake High School varsity boys” basketball team ran headlong into the buzz saw that is the Vanden High School squad on Tuesday night in a non-league game at Fairfield.
The Vikings scored 81 points ? and probably could have scored more ? in an 81-33 victory against a normally stingy Lower Lake defense.
What happened?
“That”s the best team I”ve ever played against in high school basketball,” said Lower Lake head coach Marty Udy, now in his 14th season at the Southshore school. “They were beyond athletic. I was thoroughly impressed … we were out of our league.”
Vanden”s full-court press forced 28 Lower Lake turnovers.
“We couldn”t handle that,” said Udy. “It wasn”t going to happen.”
Vanden, a Division III team in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Section, led 49-16 at halftime and 71-23 after three quarters.
Cameron Dudding”s 10 points paced the Trojans (2-2) and Kevin Freeman added eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers. David Clark had six points.
Lower Lake returns to action tonight at 5 p.m. against El Molino in the first round of the Redwood Empire Invitational at Healdsburg.
