ESPARTO — It was a sister act sans Whoopi Goldberg.
Middletown High School sisters Kayla Welton, a senior, and Kelsey Welton, a junior, combined for 28 points on Tuesday night as the Mustangs beat Esparto 50-32 in a non-league varsity girls” basketball game at Esparto.
Kayla Welton led the Mustangs (2-3) with 16 points, Kelsey Welton added another 12, and Amber Preusser had eight points.
“Kelsey was a workhorse in there on the boards,” Middletown coach Marnin Pyzer said. “She was working hard to get rebounds and put up shots. It was a really solid game on her part … she”s always going to give you her best effort every night.”
Kayla Welton scored 10 of Middletown”s 17 points in the third quarter as the Mustangs moved out to a 34-17 lead by quarter”s end.
“She had lots of good looks and took a lot of good shots,” Pyzer said.
Middletown had not scored more than 35 points in its first four games this season.
The Mustangs head north tonight to play Arcata in the opening round of the Fortuna Tournament. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
