CLHS football stars win $1,000 scholarships

LAKEPORT — Two talented seniors on Clear Lake High School”s championship varsity football team in 2007 are pretty good in the classroom, too.

As a result, All-Leaguers Erik Jameson (wide receiver, defensive back) and Daniel Gildea (defensive line) have been selected to represent the Lake-Mendocino branch of the Northern California Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame during a special banquet on Feb. 21 at the San Francisco Airport Marriott Hotel in Burlingame.

Jameson and Gildea will be among 24 players — representing 12 Northern California branches — to receive $1,000 college scholarships at the Feb. 21 ceremony, where coaches, family and friends are invited to attend.

The Lake-Mendocino branch received selected Jameson and Gildea from a field of 10 athletes representing Clear Lake, Middletown, Lower Lake, Point Arena, Willits and Ukiah high schools. All high schools in Lake and Mendocino counties were invited to nominate athletes, who are divided into “backs” and “lineman” categories and scored on three criteria — GPA (40 percent), athletic ability (30 percent) and leadership (30 percent). Each of six judges rated each of this year”s 10 applicants.

It was the first time since 1974 that two Clear Lake players were selected in the same year. Thirty-three years ago Clear Lake”s Mike Moynahan (lineman) and John Lockett (back) received that honor.

Past Clear Lake winners include Case D. Whipple (1975), Kirk Bruchler (1976), Jesus Garcia (1977), Jeff Lippstreu (1978), Ralph Garcia (1979), Scott DeLeon (1981), Dean Worra (1985), Aaron Rollins (2000), Shane Tipton (2005) and Mark Dantes (2006).

Jameson, a scholar-athlete at Clear Lake with an overall GPA of 3.76, is also a standout wrestler for the Cardinals as well as a baseball player. He is an Eagle Scout with Troop 42 of the Boy Scouts of America.

Jameson plans to attend U.C. Davis next year.

Gildea, who has a 3.92 GPA, also wrestles for the Cardinals. He is active in school government and band as well as a multitude of other school activities.

Gildea plans to attend Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo next year and major in civil engineering.

Considered along with Jameson and Gildea from the Lake-Mendocino branch were linemen Brian Agenbroad of Willits, Tyler Andrew of Ukiah, Douglas Greene of Point Arena and Joseph Rebolledo of Middletown, and backs Chris Bickford of Willits, Casey Cupples of Ukiah, Jake Sanders of Lower Lake and Travis Taylor of Middletown. All will receive certificates for being selected by their schools.

Serving as judges on this year”s Lake-Mendocino branch committee were Phil Kirby, Allan Mathews, Mike Hansen, Bob Norris, Craig Kinser and Brian Sumpter.

Last year”s Lake-Mendocino winners were Dantes of Clear Lake and Chad Bunting of Ukiah.
